Start Your Summer on the Water: Beginner's Guide to Paddle Boarding

Whether you've been eyeing the water all spring or just discovered the world of stand-up paddle boarding, there's no better time to start than right now. Summer is here — and the water is calling.

At Niphean, we believe getting on the water should feel exciting, not overwhelming. That's why we built every board with beginners in mind.

🌊 Why Paddle Boarding Is the Perfect Summer Sport

SUP (stand-up paddle boarding) is one of the fastest-growing outdoor activities for a reason. It's low-impact, easy to learn, and works on lakes, rivers, beaches, and bays. You don't need waves. You don't need experience. You just need the right board and a little confidence.

🏄 What Makes a Board "Beginner Friendly"?

Not all boards are created equal. Here's what to look for when you're just starting out:

  • Wide, stable platform — The wider the board, the easier it is to balance
  • Inflatable construction — Softer landings, easier transport, no roof rack needed
  • Lightweight design — You'll be carrying it to the water, after all
  • Complete starter kit — Pump, paddle, leash, and bag included so you're ready from day one

All Niphean Classic Series boards check every one of these boxes.

📋 Your First Day on the Water: What to Expect

Before you launch:

  1. Inflate your board to the recommended PSI (usually 12–15 PSI)
  2. Attach your fin(s)
  3. Adjust your paddle to wrist height above your head
  4. Clip on your ankle leash

Getting on the board:

  • Start in shallow, calm water
  • Begin on your knees to find your balance
  • Slowly rise to a standing position, feet shoulder-width apart
  • Keep your gaze forward — not down at your feet

Paddling basics:

  • Reach forward, plant the blade fully in the water
  • Pull back past your ankle, then exit cleanly
  • Switch sides every 4–6 strokes to paddle straight

💡 Pro Tip: Most beginners are confidently standing and paddling within 20–30 minutes. It really is that simple.

🎒 What to Bring on Your First Session

  • ☀️ Sunscreen — Reapply every 90 minutes on the water
  • 💧 Water bottle — Hydration matters more than you think
  • 🔗 Leash — Always, even on calm water
  • 🦺 PFD (personal flotation device) — Required in many states
  • 📱 Waterproof phone case or dry bag — For your essentials
